    Jim,

Thanks for the message, your kind words are very much appreciated. Try fishing that Maple close to shore during the Spring. I typically do best using a sink tip, or a long leader on a floating line (15+ft) if you tied the fly weighted. I’ve seen people do very well trolling it with a sinking line as well. In that case, I usually rig it with a grey ghost tied on about ten feet behind it–makes for an interesting looking tandem setup.

Let me know how you do, I’m interested to see how my patterns work in other areas. Let me know if you ever journey up here, we’ll get together and throw some line!

  11. Ross,

Your in-laws comment is quiet possibly the funniest comment I’ve gotten so far this year. What’s your address? The next time I have some hats and decals in stock I’ll send a few your way!

Great Site, My wife is from Eagle Lake and we go up many time during the year to visit family. I like to try to get out and fish; end of June and the start of July was way to hot. We were up for over a week. Keep up the great site, it even makes me want to go visit my in-laws.

    Hey there Ben,

great looking site, just found it this morning and looking forward to digging through it. I’m living in Vermont, but grew up in Van Buren and on Long Lake. Most definitely miss fly fishing up north. I usually try to get up there for “ice out”, but it’s never enough. I’ll just have to live vicariously through your pictures and writings.

    Hi Ben,
I was reading through some of your posts and in the LL Bean Hunting Expo one you wrote:

“waiting ever so patiently for his owner on the doorstep to the store was the most beautiful brown Weimaraner (correct me if I’m wrong) I have ever seen.”

That beautiful Brown dog is a Vizsla, or hungarian pointer. Great dogs! awesome personalities, tons of energy, and fantastic field dogs.

I dig the site, keep up the good work!

    Hey Ben,

Thanks much for the positive press on my blog. Really enjoy your “Mornin Coffee” posts! Up your way the smallmouth fishing must be prime. Down here in New york it’s getting there. Salmon are starting to run in the Great Lakes tribs – soon after it will be steelhead. The blues and stripers will be running off New York and New Jersey in another month too. It’s a great time to be alive!

Great blog. Thanks for the great reviews, which leads me to my question. I took a fly fishing lesson while in New Zealand, loved it, and I’ve decided to get a rod. I’ll be fishing trout in California streams and rivers, and am planning on getting a 4pc 5wt 9ft rod. I am also a big fan of LL Bean, and was looking that their Streamlight package and their Double L package. My question to you is do you think it’s worth the extra $100 to upgrade to the double L combo over the Streamlight Combo?
Thanks. Let me know if I can click through to LL Bean from you site 50 or 60 times.

    Ben,

Nice Website! I like the idea and theory behind it… It’s nice to see some stories from up North finally. Keep up the good work. I’m hopeful other fisherman from our hometown will comment as well as share their thoughts and passion for the sport.

  28. Hello,

Thank you very much for your kind words and enthusiasm regarding the site. I’ve been posting virtually every day (except for some Holidays) since early February, and I continue to be amazed at the good things that have come from it. Fly Fishing is a passion for me, and it’s always been about much more than simply catching fish. I created MaineFlyCastings.com to share my passion with anyone who cares to listen, and I’ve since met many great people from around the world because of it.
I’m glad you enjoy my writing and pictures, and I hope you continue to frequent the site in the future.

P.S.- I like the G.Loomis Decal on the side of the Yukon.

    Happy Castings,
    -Ben

Hello Ben, I came across this web site and realized who you were. I am very impressed with the quality of your writing and your enthusiasm. You have great pictures and knowledge about fly fishing. I beleive you will do well for yourself in the outdoor world. We need good young men as yourself to continue to promote our great outdoors and great fishing heritage. Remember its all about the journey and not so much about the destination that is important. Keep up the great work and I will look forward to enjoying this site again. God Bless. Sherb.
